Most of my travels tend to take me away from the crowds — toward places that exude charm, calm and a connection with nature. I’ve always found solace in landscapes, waterfalls, fjords and mountains rather than bustling cities. Yet, every traveler has their own preferences and many are drawn to the timeless energy of iconic cities that form Europe’s most celebrated European highlights.
After an incredible journey through Norway’s breathtaking fjords and pristine scenery, I decided to explore a different side of the continent — some of Europe’s most celebrated European highlights, destinations that blend history, glamour and timeless appeal. My journey unfolded across three countries beautifully connected by rail: Italy, Switzerland and Germany. Each offered its own iconic experience — Lake Como, Zurich and Berlin — together forming a classic trio of European highlights that showcase the continent’s diversity.
1. Lake Como, Italy – Where Glamour Meets Tranquility
My Italian sojourn began in Milan, from where I headed straight to the world-famous Lake Como — one of Italy’s most refined European highlights, synonymous with luxury and cinematic beauty. Over the years, Lake Como has gained fame as a retreat for global celebrities, none more notable than George Clooney, whose villa has become a landmark in itself.
The lake is surrounded by picturesque towns connected by scenic boat rides, each offering something unique. During my stay, I explored some of Como’s most stunning villas — Villa Erba, featured in Ocean’s Twelve; Villa d’Este, a timeless symbol of Italian elegance; and Villa Balbianello, whose breathtaking gardens appeared in Star Wars and Casino Royale. I even caught a glimpse of Richard Branson’s famed Villa Cassinella, which reportedly rents for an astonishing €24,000 a night.
I stayed at the iconic Grand Hotel Tremezzo, located beside the charming Villa Carlotta. The property perfectly embodies slow luxury — where one unwinds, indulges in fine Italian cuisine, enjoys spa treatments and soaks in panoramic lake views. A short boat ride away lies Bellagio, often called “the pearl of the lake,” a quaint town ideal for leisurely strolls through cobblestoned lanes and lakeside cafés. Among Europe’s most romantic European highlights, Lake Como truly captures the essence of slow tourism.
2. Zurich, Switzerland – Where Elegance Meets Efficiency
From Como, I boarded a train to Zurich, reaching in under four hours — a seamless journey that highlights how effortlessly Europe’s European highlights are connected by rail.
Zurich, Switzerland’s financial capital, may not rival Alpine resorts in dramatic scenery, but it offers understated sophistication. One of the highlights of my visit was exploring Rhine Falls — Europe’s largest waterfall — located near the charming Stein am Rhein village and the Munot Fortress in Schaffhausen, a journey that feels like stepping back in time.
During this visit, I stayed at The Dolder Grand, one of Zurich’s most iconic hotels. Perched above the city, it blends art, architecture and wellness beautifully. Though not located in the city center, the hotel offers regular shuttles and even vintage car rentals, making it ideal for repeat visitors seeking a tranquil escape. Zurich may be lesser discussed among classic European highlights, but it rewards travelers with refinement, efficiency and quiet charm.
Interestingly, Zurich surprised me — I happened to be there over a sunny weekend and for a moment, it felt like Mumbai! The streets were packed, cafés buzzing and the energy palpable. It was a reminder that even Switzerland’s calmest European highlights can draw crowds during peak summer months — reinforcing why thoughtful planning is key.
3. Berlin, Germany – Where History Meets Modern Spirit
My final stop was Berlin, a city I hold close to my heart, especially since we bring runners here every year for the World Major Berlin Marathon — one of the world’s most prestigious races and a contemporary European highlight in its own right.
This time, I stayed at the legendary Hotel Adlon Kempinski, located near the Brandenburg Gate. Steeped in history and grandeur, it has hosted dignitaries from across the globe, including the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi and has featured in several international films.
Even after multiple visits, Berlin continues to surprise. On this trip, I took a day excursion to Dresden, a city that rose beautifully from the ashes of World War II. Just two hours by train, Dresden adds depth to Germany’s list of cultural European highlights. The Green Vault Museum houses treasures from across the world, including the famed Green Diamond of India, while the city’s baroque architecture and relaxed pace make it an excellent base for exploring Saxony.
Reflections on European Highlights : Rediscovering Europe Through Time
Traveling as a designer is not about ticking off destinations; it’s about revisiting them — understanding how they evolve while preserving their soul. Europe’s European highlights continue to change, yet their essence remains timeless.
Lake Como, Zurich and Berlin each represent a distinct face of Europe — natural beauty, refined elegance and historical depth. Together, they remind us why Europe remains a dream destination. And with the right planning — avoiding peak crowds, choosing authentic stays and balancing city life with slower experiences — even the most celebrated European highlights can feel personal, immersive and unforgettable.
